Yes, the emcee is a real person, but he’s also an extension of that part of everyone’s brain that seeks comfort in INDIFFERENCE rather than to face harsh truths. “So What” “Why Should I Wake Up” “Cabaret” are three songs that glorify indifference, the last one which is not sung by the company, but only Sally. It affirms her indifference. The emcee reminds us both in reality and surreally that the world is beautiful when you submit your mind to blissful indifference, even if, as Cliff says at the end, “It [is] the end of the world.”

I worked stagedoor at a show he was directing. One of my favorite memories of Joel, was him arriving at our theatre, poking his head around me, and saying “and so it begins” and then just hobbling off. Such a fun guy.
