Coffee deal and political controversy The connection became far more controversial in 2022 after Uganda signed a deal with Uganda Vinci Coffee Company, associated with Pinetti, to process and export Ugandan coffee. Critics in Parliament, the coffee sector, and opposition politics argued the agreement gave excessive advantages to her company, including tax incentives, land, and preferential access to premium coffee exports. Museveni strongly defended the arrangement and openly admitted that: * Pinetti originally had little experience in coffee, * and that he personally encouraged her to enter the sector because he wanted Uganda to export more processed coffee instead of raw beans. He framed the deal as part of his broader industrialization strategy for Uganda. Critics, however, said the arrangement reflected favoritism and lack of transparency. Some commentators described her influence as unusually strong within government circles.
