honestly the opposite happened to me - people sat next to me even though there was space near other japanese people. don't know why this happened to you but honestly from my experience it's a complete myth

giiirrrlll I had an elderly lady literally get up and move seats when I sat next to her. but then this girl around my age sat down next to me and it felt like a real girls girl moment🤣🤣. even though she probably just wanted to sit too😅

I cared about it the first days, I avoided sitting, but after a few days, I was so tired I didn't cared and I sat. All I could think of was that I needed to sit, if no one was by my side, more comfy for me.

Had a woman make a noise and get up to move away from me. Then she proceeded to mean mug me while some students sat next to me. One of them mean mugged her back then looked at me and whisper said, “yeah California cool ✌️“ 😂 😂😂 not everyone is mean/racist

I‘m a Caucasian, heavily tattooed guy and this never happened to me. Nobody acknowledges me. Everyone does their thing and if there is an empty space, they sit down. But I also have a lot of Kirby merch on me so this could signal them that I’m save [happy]

i never experienced this. If there are empty spaces people will sit in an empty space. If not, they will sit next to you. Just a myth.

i experienced a couple times in japan! the one i can remember- the train was pretty busy but not packed. my fiance and i sat down next to a middle aged japanese lady and as soon as another seat opened up next to a japanese man at the next stop, she moved away from us but she looked at me and bowed. at least she was polite about it 🥹
