Driving from New York City to Boston late on a Thursday means one thing for us: a stop in New Haven. Every single time we do this road trip we pull off for pizza, and somehow we always end up back at Sally’s. It’s become part of the ritual at this point. Usually there’s a massive line wrapped outside the door, but this time we got lucky. Walked in and there was exactly one table open. Felt like we had just won the pizza lottery. The place feels frozen in time in the best way. Opened in 1938 and it honestly looks like it hasn’t changed much since. Old school booths, warm lighting, the smell of coal-fired pizza in the air, people who clearly know exactly why they came. Classic New Haven pizza energy. We started simple with the classic mozzarella and tomato sauce pie, the kind of pizza that reminds you why New Haven apizza is such a big deal. Thin, charred crust, super flavorful tomato sauce, perfect balance of cheese. It’s the type of pie that disappears before you realize how many slices you’ve had. Since we were bringing leftovers back for the family, we asked our server what we should get for a second pizza. He didn’t hesitate: the spicy little meatball. So we trusted him and ordered it, and it absolutely delivered. Perfect amount of heat, amazing flavor, and honestly just as good the next day when we reheated it. Before the pizza even hit the table I ordered a glass of Sally’s red wine which was surprisingly great, and Ryan got a Shirley Temple that came loaded with cherries. Simple, classic, perfect with pizza. Then came the mistake that wasn’t really a mistake: the cannoli pie. We were already completely full, but I remembered last time and had to order when our server tempted us. Crispy shell, sweet ricotta filling, powdered sugar everywhere. Absolutely worth it. We reheated the pizza today and somehow it was still incredible, which is always the sign of truly great pizza. If you’re driving between NYC and Boston, stopping in New Haven for pizza is basically mandatory, and Sally’s Apizza will always be our go to, even after trying pretty much every spot on the block. The history, the old school vibe, the coal fired crust, the tomato sauce, the staff, everything about it just hits. Still the best pizza we’ve ever had. I hope you get to try ♥️ @Sally’s Apizza #newhaven #newhavenpizza #pizzareview #pizzatok #roadtrip
