“You’ll be drinking again in no time. You’re a drunk.”
Nineteen years later, I am still sober.
On 27 August 2007, after more than twenty years of destroying myself with alcohol, I made a decision: I deserved better. My family deserved better.
At the time, I honestly thought I might last a week. I had written myself off, and I believed many others had too.
I thought I was getting what I deserved for being a bad brother, partner and son. I believed I had blown every opportunity and that my life was heading towards a lonely, undignified end.
But here’s what I know now: no one should ever be written off.
With the love and support of my partner, Zoe, I slowly began to believe in myself again. I realised my potential had never disappeared. It had simply been buried beneath alcoholism.
Once I became sober and started working towards new goals, my life changed.
Nineteen years of sobriety has given me the chance to retrain as a personal trainer, run my own business, speak to thousands of students, professional athletes, military personnel and business leaders, run marathons and ultramarathons in incredible places, write a book, make a film, appear on TV and meet so many phenomenal people.
Most importantly, sobriety has allowed me to become a better father, partner and son.
I still get things wrong, and I know I need to keep working on myself. But today I am proud to be sober, proud of the life I have rebuilt, and proud that I proved some of the doubters wrong — including myself.
While there is breath, there is hope. #addictionrecovery #wedorecover🙏 #odaat #alcoholism
