Always leave a chair and something else. Thought it was known.

I’m SOOoOooo sick of this! My husband and I dispersed camped in Breckenridge in June and we are pretty sure this family in the spot beside us also put stuff up in the spot beside them just so they had privacy. The entitlement with “spots” is getting insane!

I’m a ranger and if I would’ve found a chair and a jug of water I would’ve assumed they forgot their stuff and were not coming back. And then that stuff would’ve gone in the back of the truck for lost and found. And then someone new would’ve gotten the spot. You’re in the right, dude.

People leave tents and then leave for days on end to hold a campsite.

Idk, I’m always on the fence about this one. We went camping a couple weeks ago in Crested Butte and STRUGGLED to find a spot. Several had this same set up..a chair and one other small item left at site. Because we know so many have rooftop campers or vans, we didn’t take them, but it was definitely something we questioned and debated.

In Montana that means the spot was claimed. I wouldn’t have camped there

A lot of people camp in vans and truck campers as well. I would not take a site that someone left items at. Regardless if it was a chair and water jug. However, people who set ghost tents to save spots can kick rocks.

I’m a camp host. Would’ve collected the items for lost and found. Cleared the spot for the next first come, first serve. You want to reserve a spot? Go to rec dot gov and do so. Dispersed camping is non reservable.

So in Colorado if I find a campsite I can never leave it or someone will take it even if I leave a few items? Not cool. What if I want to explore and I don’t sleep in a tent? Seems like people in Colorado are selfish and definitely not courteous with this attitude

I wouldn’t take the spot. Saw a group steal a spot that had a chair and some other things in it the other day in a national park, ended up being an old couple who were exploring the park and the ranger came and kicked the group that stole it out. It is a unsaid rule of camping that you respect the spot and leave it alone if there’s stuff there

if you actually wanted to claim the spot, you might leave a note on the chair dating that you're claiming the spot. people leave stuff all over The place and have no intentions of returning for it. how is anybody supposed to know?

I’ve rolled up onto many many spots with blankets left behind or old chairs or just junk. It’s so common to find junk in CO camping spots it’s hard to tell either way man.

well I personally wouldn't have camped there because someone did leave behind something, doesn't matter how inexpensive the item. I view that as a claimed spot. we camp in our truck and don't usually have much to mark our spot other than chairs either.

If they left anything and come back, it's just courtesy to concede. You don't get to determine what someone is willing to have stolen (like a chair/tent/camper) to communicate to others a site is taken

I’m from Colorado and camped out there almost my whole life, you are in the right. In dispersed camping on public land, a spot is only considered “claimed” when it’s actively occupied, not just marked with items. Glad you stood your ground!

Why not invite them to share the spot. You said it yourself it’s July in Colorado and it’s SWARMING with campers. Wouldn’t that be the right thing to do?
