This is one of the wildest, most extreme exoplanets we've found to date! Tylos (WASP-121b), an ultra-hot Jupiter located 880 light-years away, is revealing a climate so extreme that it challenges everything we know about planetary weather. Using the Very Large Telescope (VLT), astronomers have mapped its atmosphere in unprecedented detail, uncovering powerful supersonic winds, vaporized metals, and an alien climate unlike anything in our Solar System. This scorching gas giant is tidally locked, meaning one side is permanently facing its star, Dilmun, while the other remains in perpetual darkness. The dayside reaches blistering temperatures of 2,360 K (2,087°C), while the nightside is significantly cooler, creating a violent temperature contrast that fuels extreme atmospheric circulation. Winds on Tylos race at incredible speeds, reaching 26.8 km/s (16.7 mi/s), more than twice Earth's escape velocity. These winds accelerate as they travel across the planet, starting at 13.7 km/s in the morning and becoming supersonic by evening. This massive equatorial jet stream spans half the planet, churning metals into the upper atmosphere and transporting heat to the nightside.
