It’s the buzzfeed conundrum all over again, big internet media outlet hedging it’s bet that what its viewers are coming to see is them and not the talent. And when that talent scurry off on their own, invariably the audience goes with them.

I think in Dave's case, similar to Planet Money, they were coming from pretty leftist perspectives, even more so than the publications they were part of. Their audience wanted news that didn't have to "both sides" objective truths, something that our normal news outlets fully fail at every time they can.

I actually wrote about this in my journalism masters thesis! How Legacy media is failing to realize that their reporters are not that interchangeable because audiences are connecting more now than ever with the reporters and not necessarily the news. It's almost like the people making decisions are disconnected with how the internet changed how people consume the news now.

This started happening before TikTok too. Chloe Abrams, Phil Edwards, Johnny Harris, Joss Fong, among others who started at Vox created their own brands on YouTube in the late 2010s just as TikTok was starting off. Ezra Klein, who was a founder of Vox, parlayed that success into becoming one of the faces of the New York Times.

people in general are getting tired of legacy media. Our local paper for a large city in TX was bought by legacy and went downhill. The biggest news source now is a local non-profit newsroom that doesn’t take federal funding. They’re thriving here and are only funded by few ads but majority donations

I think a large part is people feel they can trust a person more than an organisation especially when mainstream news is biased but insists it isn't. look at the BBC with Israel or Corbyn. trust is a real currency now and it's hard to get back
