@invitedinred: This is called a “reset.” Taz has had shoes for over a year now. Every 6-7 weeks in the summer he gets them taken off, gets a trim, and then shoes are put back on. In the winter he’ll go for up to 8 weeks between resets. Shoes are put on him to help protect his hooves with the amount of riding and work that he does. Sand will wear down hooves. (Think of sand paper) Stones can cause bruising. The shoes help prevent that. They can also help with minor conformation flaws, like pigeon toed or minor deviated legs. This man has been my farrier since before Taz was born. He promises he won’t leave me and I’d be devastated if he did 😆 My horses have never been lame, never lost a shoe, and never missed a trim.
