Most basic backstory probably, but I have a Tiefling Paladin that’s an orphan raised in a convent/temple because his parents didn’t want a Tiefling child. He may or may not have a twin sibling that is entirely human (or whatever race his parents are I haven’t got that far yet). But he’s an Oath of Redemption Paladin that believes nearly every creature has the capacity for goodness and empathy, and he thinks his parents loved him but couldn’t care for him

For my very first character I was really struggling with coming up with a good backstory. I LOVE angst but I was just at a loss for what to do. I had so many ideas but at the same time I felt like if I knew what angst had happened or would likely happen it wouldn’t hit me as much. So I gave my character amnesia and knew nothing about them. Their appearance? Nothing. Species? Nada. Class? Hell if I knew. I didn’t even know their name. As I played more, little hints about who I was would drop and I learned with my character who they were. There wasI only gave my DM one instruction: make me cry. I told him not to hold back, and if I didn’t go into a depression after he was done, then he had failed. He was so excited and he absolutely succeeded. Never in my life have I played a better character than that. It was so angsty, so hurtful and I sobbed so many times. It was a great introduction into dnd.

Mine my backstory was “Tiefling monk abandoned as a baby so she’s looking for her birth parents” so my DM made her the daughter of The Devil, From Da Bible

I wish I had a dm that took my back stories into account… I am here writing super simple backstories because my ex dm wouldn’t use my in depth backstories at all

I asked my dm if my pc could just wake up in a ditch with a curse (I didn't want to write his lore myself (I'm lazy)) and suddenly he knew exactly what ditch, what curse, who did this and I am so very scared

I have a paladin/ranger (multi class) that they use a homebrew oath (oath of love) and it's to their dead wife so if the campaign starts on a dangerous note, I enjoy asking the DM if she can have an "on screen" death (I've never had a campaign make it to start). He has a silly gimmick though where, depending on if the DM will allow it, he can request a "vibe check" from his wife

My dm looked at my barbarian who barely knows the names of the gods and the ones she knows are the gods of the night and moon, then threw the light god at her, making the party assume she’s crazy when she said he was in her dream. It took getting a magic glow stick that flash banged them to convince them he was there. He now watches them like they are a reality tv show (also light god might have murdered her family??? Maybe his dad)
