Here’s some of my top tips for stretch fabric 💛: 1. Always use a stretch or jersey needle depending on the fabric (I used a jersey needle for my jersey fabric here). These needles are designed with a ballpoint tip that push between the fabric fibers instead of piercing them. 2. Use polyester thread! Gutermann really is the best and worth the money imo 🤭 3. Check your manual and make sure you’re using a stitch that’s designed for stretching, for example a narrow zig zag or lighting stitch. Using a normal straight stitch will pop when stretched! 4. For a hem on a stretch garment like a basic t-shirt, I like using a twin needle!! Gives a nice professional looking finish. I like to increase my stitch length to about 3, and make sure you’re stitching on the right side of the fabric where the twin needle lines will show :) 5. Really try not to stretch the fabric as you sew, unless the pattern tells you to (ex. binding for a neckline). Stretching the fabric as you sew will cause unwanted ripples or wavy seams! 6. On some machines you can lower the presser foot pressure, which can help it not stretch while sewing and reduce wavy seams. My machine doesn’t have that, but check your manual! 7. I highly recommend playing with your settings on a piece of your stretch fabric before each project to make sure your stitches look right!! Play with the tension, stitch length, etc until you like the way it looks :) Practice the way you intend to sew, ex use the same stretch fabric & practice with the same amount of layers. 8. Getting an overlocker def upgraded my stretch garment sewing! Worth the investment if you want to sew with stretch fabric more 🫶 Made my top using the newly released Cali Tee pattern by @madeline 🦋 Used a cotton spandex jersey and did the picot lace trim option! #sewingtips #sewingpattern #stretchfabric #sewingclothes #beginnersewing
