@wannabetudor: This painting is really fascinating to me, especially because it was painted in 1750, a century not so kind to any people that weren’t a certain race. #painting #historytok #racism #message #HistoryTime #historytiktok #fyp
THE POINT IS is that we have been programmed to naturally assume the brown lady is the servant.

Not only that, but the hand placement. It’s a common signal of dominance to have your hand on someone else. Like a pet or a child. It’s ownership, possession and allowance.

This is amazing!! And this is one of my fav paintings bc you rarely hear much ab people who were of darker skin tones being wealthier than people of paler skin tones especially in that time💗💗

Black dye was also incredibly expensive at this time so her dress was likely the more expensive of the two v

Also the yt servant is holding the fruit while the brown woman is picking the fruit. Meaning she works WITH her servant. She doesn’t make her do all the work. She is graceful, to do the picking of the fruit herself 🌹

The way their were so many signs that the darker woman was wealthier but we ignore them and quickly assumed the classes by race…

I love being black people in paintings like this, its important to see that not all of them were subjected to horror, but instead treated how they should be treated; with respect.
