@socialcap: The emergency fund is the sacred cow of personal finance—and it might be time to challenge it. Most “emergencies” aren’t surprises. They’re deferred maintenance—a roof you ignored, a tire you didn’t replace, a deductible you knew was coming. Meanwhile, that cash is sitting idle, losing to inflation, all because we’re afraid of… what exactly? Planning beats panicking. And strategy beats stuffing cash under the mattress. #tylergardner #yourmoneyguideontheside #socialcap #realwealth #emergencyfund #cashdrag #financialstrategy #moneytruths #wealthmindset

my available balance on my credit card is my emergency funds...if needed I can move money from my index funds to pay the balance.

What if someone loses their job? You think ALL money should be invested instead of liquid?

You don’t need to get a good return on emergency funds. If it keeps up with inflation and taxes that’s fine. Need that if my car starts leaking transmission fluid or for a medical emergency

For over ten years my emergency fund has been my brokerage account. It’s grown exponentially and I’ve never had an emergency. This is the smart way to do it

Having an emergency funds allows you to fund unanticipated expenses without the risk of having to sell investments in a down market

My emergency fund is me swiping my low interest rewards credit card, then pulling the money from my brokerage account and paying it off before any the interest is applied.

no it's not over rated - long term unemployment is very dangerous without an emergency fund

I am still do not follow the logic, what ever the expense is, either paying by credit card, which still need to have the ability to pay it in full end of the month. Or the other case is save up for expense month in advance is still money in cash.

Correct if wrong, but I can take money out of SGOV at any time penalty free , but the second I put money into a taxable brokerage every dollar gets taxed on withdrawal regardless of cost basis.
