It sucks. To them, your relationship never existed. It's so weird and sad and they don't know it at all.

my father was in hospital with bleeds on the brain. the doctor asked who's come to visit you today, he looked at me and it was only for 2 seconds, but he has no clue who I was. It destroyed me

Viggo Mortensen has a great discussion about dementia on the Armchair Expert podcast. To try and summarize it: the biggest struggle for caregivers of someone with dementia is that we watch them talk about and experience things that aren't true. This scares us and our instinct is to try and yank them back into reality. Often times the better thing to do is allow them to peacefully exist in the reality they are experiencing and try to comfort them instead of correcting them.

I have always said it's the best way to leave this life, don't really think about the other side of things.

this had been my biggest fear with my dad. he had aggressive terminal brain cancer, died a month after diagnosis. he was really loosing his mind, seeing things. not remembering what happened moments before. but he never forgot his love for his kids. he was barely able to form sentences, but when asked who I am smiled, looked directly at me and said thats my daughter Kate. his final words were i love you, whispering it over and over again to us. I know not everyone gets that experience and so im very grateful we did.

My grandmother on my dad's side was always such a mean person, until she got dementia. She was so nice, it was unsettling. She forgot my name, though she understood that she knew me as a relative.

One of the last times I saw my grandma, I was visiting with my mom. My grandma called me my dad’s name (who I haven’t seen in 20 years) and why we didn’t bring me. It was heartbreaking.

my grandpa passed in may. he didnt know my name for the last couple years but when we asked if he knew who we are he said yes, and I truly believed he did know we were his grandkids. the name doesnt matter, the feeling of family is what matters.
