@ben.askins: The best time to ask your employees how you can do better is while they are still working with you. Not once they have decided to leave. Credit: @adamgrant #business #management #leadership
I declined an exit interview when leaving to start my own business. So they sued me. And lost.

Well people do raise concerns during their time but most companies have this "our way or the highway" attitude. Only when they see the people are leaving then they take those complaints seriously.

I refuse to participate in exit interviews. I tell them, if you really wanted my opinion, you would have asked for it while I was still working here.

Such an important point! Employee feedback is key to continuous improvement, not just when they’re leaving.

I think they believe they are solving this problem with voluntary surveys, but I never take them. I don't take them if I'm happy or unhappy for fear of retaliation even though they say it's anonymous.

I was with a company for 5 years, they had policy of yearly one-to-ones, I never had one.

I refuse exit interviews. If an employer doesn’t listen to and address staff issues while people are employed, it’s a complete waste of everybody’s time to ask for the same feedback post resignation.

Sadly at most companies it’s a tickbox exercise

Staying interviews… People, fear for retaliation and anonymity is not real anonymity. We used to have our surveys and things that we wanted to express the company, but they group you in a group of five and I was on a team of three…

When I'm leaving a job .. "Hey we want to find out what happened so we can do better in the future." ..... yeah, I don't care... bye lol.

I used my exit interview to sit down long enough to say “if you had read my multiple emails and acted on them or responded this meeting wouldn’t be happening”. Got up and left

when i worked for Coles in Australia, they have a "we are listening" thing they do every year. And almost every year my bosses would throw our responses back at us, and say we were lying and what not. So people stopped doing them. Bosses who cannot admit fault and block that information going up the food chain are the worst.

It’s only a clever idea if you trust the people you’re talking to. We all know companies only care about themselves and will use whatever they have against you most times. If I had to stay interview or interview in the middle of my tenure there I wouldn’t be telling them the truthbecause it’s gonna do nothing but cause me pain.

Early feedback opportunities are great preemptive measures, but exit interviews are not done just for adjusting retention policy, and nothing can compare to the level of honesty that the freedom of being already out gives you because giving negative feedback to your source of income is dangerous.

I would prefer this to performance reviews which feel way too pressured and one-sided. Instead of justifying why I should stay, I want that assurance that I can stay.

This sounds so nice and a great idea. The only way to grow your income is to move companies. 2% raises are not productive for employees and HR is instructed to push back.

exit interviews only work if someone actually believes them. I do enjoy hearing about all my former team members looking or finding new jobs. If only they had listened to why we were unhappy they could have moved one director instead of losing 8 employees in a year.

Turnover is one of the biggest costs for any company in every industry, the cost of hiring, onboarding, and training coupled with the results you get from a new hire versus a veteran employee is a huge drain on resources, you just need to listen to your people while they’re still there

No way it’s just like the survey that nothing happens. Also could you imagine what would happen if you were honest about your boss to higher ups. They control your paycheck and raise and bonuses. Can’t imagine how this would work in reality

No-one you know :
The last time I attended an exit interview I received an email a few weeks later, informing me that, as a result of comments made in my exit interview they had decided to run a "post-contract disciplinary process" against me. They concluded that I was guilty of gross misconduct, and had I not resigned I would have been fired anyway. Most petty thing I've ever seen from a company.

Mr H :
Just add to it quarterly or yearly reviews should not be done by a person‘s mediate manager entirely for the purpose of finding problems to retain employees that interview should be done possibly by HR or an outside party. Mediate managers are interested in making themselves look good, not and looking for problemsthat they themselves may be involved in.
