@kyabird: These two feathers came from my blue-throated macaw during her molt—and they’re a perfect example of how precise and fascinating the molting process really is. Parrots don’t shed feathers randomly. During a molt, they lose flight feathers in symmetrical pairs—one from each wing—to maintain balance and flight ability. These are called primaries, and they’re built for flying: long, stiff, and asymmetrical to cut through the air and generate lift. Unlike body feathers, flight feathers have a strong central shaft (rachis) and tightly interlocking barbs that make them aerodynamic. They’re part of a feather system that includes primaries, secondaries, and coverts—all working together to create flight control, speed, and lift. Molting can make birds itchy, tired, or a little cranky, but it’s a natural, healthy process.
