Please please please read Humankind by Rutger Bregman. It is the rebuttal of Sapiens. It is a book that judges Yuval’s view points

Thank you! I couldn’t stand how this book was marketed as some groundbreaking, impartial exploration of humanity… only for it to turn out to be mediocre, biased, and soaked in white-centric propaganda.

Yuval is being exposed as a fraud by his own peers in academia. How the World Made the West by Professor Josephine Quinn is a brilliant book by a genuine erudite scholar.

The book feels like a very general understanding of the western world for teenagers.

I loved Sapiens for the first three chapters, and then he just kept talking about Europe and making weird colonialism apologia.

Yes!!! As an anthropologist, this book drives me crazy! A historian is not the guy you should be listening to about evolution and the paleolithic! Futhermore, even if this guy wrote a good book about these topics, the book is so old and the field moves so quickly that the info would be outdated by now. No joke, textbooks that are released like 2 years ago are already outdated because they take several years to create and put together so by the time they're out they already need revisions😵‍💫

I don't think the Mayan calendar sits anywhere in the foundation of our concept of time... or that math would be any different if it didn't adhere to conventions of Arabic numerals. Yes, world history is not European history, but no those are not pillars of human history.

his Israhelly background comes out all throughout the book. … Harary shows colonialism in a way that makes it feel neutral and almost scientific

Great critique. Professional anthropologist do not read this book. I have a PhD from Rutgers and taught for close to 25 years. I read the first page and never picked it up again. It’s basically a joke.

Thank you for your perspective. I agree that Sapiens reflects a largely Eurocentric narrative, and it’s true that no single book can speak for the full complexity of human experience. But I do wonder if we’re setting an impossible standard here.

Yeah it never sat well with me either. It felt like either a rehash of other similar books & when he did provide analysis, there wasn’t sources to back them up.

This is a fair criticism. The book is too centered on European History. However, I think it is an exaggeration to say it completely disregards all non-European civilization. The forth chapter of the book is completely about Oceania and human settling of Australia and Aotearoa. Overall, I don’t think it is completely devoid of meaningful insight. Though, a lot of books about the same topic are better.

Thank youuuu Sapiens is a wildly biased opinion piece mascarading as some definitive research results 😭 Harari wouldn’t know how to properly research and cite material if it hit him on the head- that bibliography should have been at least five times bigger (IF there existed actual studies that back up the claims he makes lmao)

People take such a puritanical stance on books. I recommend it to the teenagers I work with because it gives them a crash course in some interesting developments that have elevated our species. No one ever said it is the complete history of mankind. Shock horror, a single book won't hold all the answers 😲😲😲😲
