More than 4,500 years ago, ancient Egyptians were accomplishing things that still inspire engineers, physicians, astronomers, and archaeologists today. The Great Pyramid of Giza was constructed from millions of stone blocks and aligned extraordinarily closely with the cardinal directions—all without modern surveying equipment. Egyptian medicine was equally remarkable. Texts such as the Edwin Smith Papyrus contain systematic observations of injuries to the skull, brain, and spine. Egyptian physicians practiced wound treatment, dentistry, surgery, and other forms of medicine thousands of years ago. Their astronomers carefully observed the night sky, developed calendars, and used astronomical knowledge in religion, agriculture, and architecture. And Egypt was unmistakably African. Its civilization developed along the Nile in northeastern Africa and maintained deep relationships with Nubia and Kush to the south, Libya to the west, and the Levant and Mediterranean world to the northeast. But what did ancient Egyptians actually look like? There wasn’t one Egyptian appearance across more than 3,000 years of history. Egypt’s population was indigenous to northeastern Africa while also interacting and mixing with neighboring African, Mediterranean, and Near Eastern populations. Later attempts to force ancient Egyptians entirely into modern categories of either “Black” or “white” can obscure that much more complicated history. Their achievements don’t need exaggeration.
