@trip.to.japan1: Is this a SCAM? 😱 Why do Japanese restaurants and izakayas bring an extra dish you didn’t order? Let us explain 👇 This is “otoshi” a small appetizer that is brought to all customers in certain restaurants and izakaya and is considered as a form of cover charge. Think of how, in countries in Europe and America, you pay a service charge but also receive “free” bread and butter. Well, otoshi is similar to that. 🍥Depending on where you go, these otoshi can differ massively in quality. Cheaper izakaya may just bring you some cut raw cabbage and sauce whilst upscale restaurants put a lot of effort into designing a tasty start to your meal. In the video, our otoshi was a simpleーyet tastyーfish cake. 💴They are usually priced between ¥300 and ¥600, with more touristy areas charging more (which is what happened to us here near Tokyo Station). So no, it’s not a scam. It’s a part of Japan’s eating out culture 😁 Like and follow for more tips about Japan! #japan #japantravel #discoverjapan #japanesefood #izakaya #japanesecuisine #Foodie
