instead of smashing the lid and all the debris going in the line why not use a pick and lift the frame and lid up from the side?

When you get the sonde on the screen turn the sensitivity down and it will help you pinpoint the mark also when the blue bar is all the way up you can’t see if the signal gets stronger/weaker , cast iron covers also bounce the signal so you might have to change the frequency 👍
