Here’s a real-life project where we applied drone mapping and GIS tools — and how you too can follow these steps! 𝙋𝙧𝙤𝙟𝙚𝙘𝙩: 𝙍𝙤𝙖𝙙 𝘼𝙨𝙨𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩 & 𝘿𝙧𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙜𝙚 𝘿𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙡𝙤𝙥𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩 We carried out a full workflow from drone flight to analysis using DJI M350 RTK, Pix4Dmapper, and ArcGIS. 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩-𝐛𝐲-𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧: 1. Drone Data Capture We flew the DJI Matrice 350 RTK over the road corridor, capturing high-resolution images with precise geotags using RTK positioning. 2. Image Processing in Pix4Dmapper ✔ Aligned images ✔ Generated Orthomosaic ✔ Created Digital Elevation Model (DEM) ✔ Built 3D model of terrain and features These outputs were used as the foundation for further analysis. 3. Spatial Analysis in ArcGIS With ArcGIS 10.x, we: • Identified damaged road sections using visual inspection and DEM-based profiling • Extracted exact XY coordinates of these defects for reporting • Detected encroaching buildings within the road’s Right of Way (ROW) • Shared findings with maintenance/enforcement teams for action 4. Drainage Design Using the DEM, we analyzed elevation flow and slope direction to guide the design of a functional drainage system aligned with the road's natural topography.
