The Safavid state collapsed due to a combination of complex factors. After the death of Shah Abbas I, who was very strong, the situation gradually weakened. In 1722, Mahmud of the Ghilzai Afghans attacked Isfahan and besieged it. After a long siege, Shah Sultan Husayn surrendered and was deposed. This was the actual end of the Safavid state.
