Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says she wants to avoid escalating the trade war with the United States, noting that Canada will not win "through brute force." Ms. Smith also said it would be "disastrous" for the Canadian economy if the country cut off or taxed Alberta oil to the U.S. Instead, Ms. Smith is calling for de-escaltion and to double down on diplomacy so that the U.S. could reverse the policies after the U.S. midterms in November. Saskatchewan premier Scott Moe, in a separate press conference, also rejected any suggestion that Ottawa apply export levies on natural resources such as oil and potash in retaliation. Both premiers voiced support for Ottawa’s planned dollar-for-dollar countertariff strategy. “But only when those tariffs are focused and targeted to have a minimal impact on Canadian industries and families – and a larger impact on our trading partner that we want to bring back to the table,” Mr. Moe said.
