"“Don’t explain it to me again,” Josephine said. Her voice carried across the terrace before Daniel could finish the defense he had clearly been preparing. Beyond the glass doors, the dinner guests shifted in their seats. Silverware tapped lightly against china, and someone inside lowered a coffee cup, finally giving up the pretense that they were not listening. Daniel stood beside the railing with both hands planted against the painted wood. Melissa remained several feet from him, her arms folded tightly across her stomach. Josephine faced her brother and waited. He had spent nearly the entire evening trying to manage every uncomfortable moment, but now there was nowhere useful for that instinct to go. Daniel glanced toward Melissa. For a second, he looked ready to bring her into the conversation, but then he stopped himself. That tiny hesitation mattered. Josephine saw it immediately, and Melissa noticed it too. Daniel turned back toward Josephine. “I kept telling myself I was still the person who knew what everybody needed,” he said. Josephine did not respond. The silence left him no choice but to keep talking. Daniel swallowed. His confidence looked different now. Earlier, it had seemed to fill the entire room; now it appeared more like an old habit he had never learned how to set aside. “After Dad d.i.e.d, everyone called me,” he said. Josephine watched him closely. “That’s true.” “I took care of things.” “You did.” “I made decisions when no one else wanted to make them.” “You helped us.” Daniel gave a small nod. The confirmation offered him no relief, and Josephine could see that clearly. He lowered his gaze toward his hands. “I think I became dependent on feeling necessary.” Melissa shifted her weight. The movement was subtle, but Daniel heard it and looked toward her. She did not step in to save him. Josephine answered instead. “We needed your help back then.” Daniel nodded once more. “You did.” “We didn’t need you supervising us forever.” His jaw tightened, but he accepted the words without trying to argue. That alone was different. For years, every criticism had turned into a negotiation. Every boundary became a misunderstanding, and every challenge gave Daniel another opportunity to explain why his judgment should matter more than everyone else’s. Tonight, that pattern had finally stopped working. Josephine moved a little closer. Her posture remained controlled, and her voice never rose. “You kept giving instructions after nobody asked for them.” Daniel stared at the terrace floor. “You corrected everything.” He closed his eyes briefly. “You questioned every decision.” He released a slow breath. “You made fun of anything you couldn’t control.” Melissa turned her gaze toward the dark water stretching beyond the property. Josephine noticed her reaction before looking back at Daniel. “You did that to me for years.” Daniel opened his mouth, but no defense followed. Josephine had expected one, and somehow its absence unsettled her more than another argument would have. Inside, Admiral Mercer remained seated near the bar. He had gone back to his coffee and made no effort to look toward the terrace. He stayed out of it completely. Josephine had noticed that as well. Earlier, Daniel had turned the entire evening into something public. Now Mercer was deliberately giving the family the privacy Daniel had not. Daniel eventually raised his eyes. “I was proud of you.” Josephine’s expression stayed unchanged. Daniel noticed and continued more cautiously. “When you joined, I was proud.” “Then you had a very strange way of showing it.” Daniel flinched slightly. Josephine stepped nearer. “Pride doesn’t sound like ridicule.” “No.” “Pride doesn’t mean making someone smaller until you feel comfortable again.” Daniel swallowed. “No.” Melissa turned slightly toward them. Daniel saw the movement, but he still did not try to pull her into the conversation. Josephine noticed how much effort that seemed to require. It mattered. It was not en
