It fried the nerves around my spine and disabled me permanently. I was fine prior.

Coming from a small fiber and large fiber neuropathy patient the electrocution didn’t hurt, but the needles were the most painful part

I’ve been unlucky enough to have had EMG tests run in the 1980s as well as within the past year. Things have changed a lot. In the 80s, they would use a needle and probe slightly larger than a meat thermometer probe. Now, they use much smaller needles. Both hurt, but the old version was 50 times worse.

EMG isn’t too bad if you don’t have nerve damage. Damaged nerves and EMgs hurt like h$ll!

I think it really depends on why you are getting the NCS/EMG. For me the EMG portion is much worse than the NCS. My condition causes really painful muscle contractions so when you have to contract the muscle for the EMG it triggers that and makes it really painful. The NCS definitely irritates my nerves, but isn’t too bad. Like you, the pain/discomfort usually just lasts that day. Overall it’s not a horrible test and it is definitely worth it for the results.

I call it a tiny cattle prod 😂. EMG wasn’t horrible, I just wasn’t expecting the length of the needle. I took a flexeril to help with spasms after they were done. ❤️

I’ve got them done twice! My second time was terrible, I was in so much pain (I was a med student at the time and it was my neurology professor who did it - terrible!! Zero skills there 🤣)

my EMG hurt way more than my NCS due to the muscle contractions. they did my right arm and leg and i’m getting another one on both my hands are a different hospital system so i’m curious how the experience will differ!

They typically are painful. But if your nerves are affected as in loss of nerve you may not feel it.

My EMG didn’t hurt exactly, it felt weird, though, for sure. I didn’t like the feeling, but it wasn’t excruciating pain! It was way more tolerable than I feared, and I consider myself to have a very low pain tolerance!
