@timaholic: Replying to @jamesclark_official build on the Internet first. Find where there is demand for your project. Go to those specific markets. Build an audience in those markets. Actually make a living play music. Do not spend time in your local scene doing anything unless all you wanna do is play your local scene and then in that case live your dreams and enjoy the free beer
i mean playing those local shows vuilds your performance to better before you make it to playing for thousand plus people.

you're speaking the truth man. we only played locally once this year and are only playing shows out of state, specifically festivals

The effort to reward ratio is also way bigger focusing on building online. You can go viral to 1M people with a video that took you 3 minutes to make vs spending hundreds of hours playing shows to no one

I’ve been telling this to my artists kr years. I toured for 10 years and if we had the ability to build on the internet back then we would have done that.

where have u been 10 years of us dragging our shot around. I haven't a clue how to do any of this and people on the internet are kind of cryptic about it. thank you for this. I knew there had to be another way besides playing locally. I love playing. Don't get me wrong. We just want a bigger fan base.

I built a massive following as the producer and writer for my wife’s project over the past few years (almost 400k TikTok followers, 120k+ YT subs) and we now have one of the largest followings in our town, all without spinning our wheels for years in the local scene. It works.

As an LA resident for the past eight years, the artists that I have seen succeed the most, and be able to start doing profitable tours, are the ones who spent far more time growing a national/international audience online than they did trying to connect to their local scene.

absolutely 💯 there not really many other options. plus, if you build a genuine fan base, you're getting active listeners not just passive 1 time

Unless you are working musician, then take every gig you can because you have to pay the bills because sleeping on Mom‘s couch gets old

People are on their phones most of the day. The chance of your content coming across their screen is high versus hauling equipment around for pocket change

This is fantastic advice. I definitely believe that you should still play local shows. But don’t oversaturate yourself and hyper focus on exactly what you’re talking about.

i say this with all the love in my heart, but some musicians are lowk delusional and DONT want to be professional artists/musicians. they want to play, yes, and they want to play shows. but they don’t want to have anything to do with what is required of artists that have a fan base on the scale they want

I like this take, but van tours aren't cheap either. you have done a takedown of time and cost for playing local, I wonder if you'd do an analysis of cost vs revenue on a van tours once your following is established

Great advice. This comment coming from a 53 year old musician. I may have to try this internet thing.

This 100%. Watching this unfold with a pool of friend’s bands. The two with good management already nabbed opportunities and label interest prior to even debuting, while the DIY ones (including my own) are maybe a quarter of their success from our efforts alone.
