In American-speak asking “you alright?” does have some meaning. So if someone is crying we’d ask “are you alright?” That’s why the first time a Brit said that to me it freaked me out like don’t I look alright?!

How are you means they just want a one word answer - so that’s when you answer, “great” or “good,” or “not bad.” And then you can add thanks at the end, like, “great, thanks!” Or “good, thanks!” Now you know!!! ❤️

I wait for the other person to respond when I say, “Hey how are you?” - unless it’s family …lol 😂 I usually blurt out what I need or want to say or keep on going - so I’m guilty!

a walk off is weird, but yes it's true the how are you isn't looking for a thoughtful response it's supposed to be responded with, "good, how are you?", and then a return good. (or alright/fine)
