If you do this, you should always jam a chopstick between the blades so they don't spin. If the fan blades spin, you could potentially damage the electronics inside or worse

My husband used an air compressor on mine. Then I proceeded to go ahead and take it apart and clean it. I was thoroughly disgusted with the amount of dirt that was still left in it. So they do need taken apart and cleaned, but that’s my opinion.

over spinning the motor/bearings could ruin the motor itself. best to stop the fan blades from spinning to ensure no damage occurs

My fan is not open in the back, the air comes in from vents down on the bottom on the sides

Better tip is to buy a Dreo pedestal fan and not a tower fan. The Dreo fans come completely apart for cleaning and the blade and cover are washable. Even after blowing off these tower fans are still covered in caked on dirt.
