On the one hand, Gawker was literally just an online tabloid. On the other, Thiel’s homosexuality was a well known / poorly kept secret that was going to be reported somewhere eventually. And given the other weird things they reported about him (e.g. blood transfusions to “stay young”) I suspect he just wanted to make an example of a media outlet as a warning to stop looking too deeply into him and his actions.
