Years ago one of our k9 handlers played around with a laser pointer & tight beam flashlight trying to get the dog to focus & load in the car when he wouldn’t listen. First night shift we had to do a fresh track from a burglary the dog was about to pull him over until we got away from the street lights & turned on the flashlights, dog completely fixated on the lights & refused to track. It took several weeks of constant training & correction to ‘fix’ the dog from those few days with the laser. Never again!

There’s no reason for this this is just going to create OCD in the dog. If the dog cannot properly locate the decoy, then the dog needs to be reevaluated or washed from the program. this is only going to train the dog to start looking for the laser.

all fun and games til lasers or reflective lights end up on something or someone it shouldnt. dogs dont distinguish the colored lasers differently from small lights. for example light reflecting off a phone can create a small light reflection seemingly looking like a “laser” in the dogs eyes
