Jesus Christ, you non-locals take anything you hear and run with it. Oprah doesn’t own the road. It’s owned by our local Haleakala Ranch. The county has a key to the gates and the road was opened after the ranch cleared the cattle. MOD was onsite to direct 50 cars at a time for safety because the road is not designed for heavy traffic. The confusion exists because Oprah paved the road. Before that it was only passable by 4wd. So no Oprah, no alternative evacuation route for passenger cars.
