I used to be a perfectionist. And honestly… sometimes I still catch myself sliding back into it. But I’ve learned to recognize it fast because every time I let it take over it pulls me straight into a pit. Here’s what perfectionism looks like for most men: All in or all out. 100% or nothing. Perfect plan or no plan at all. And it sounds disciplined on the surface. But it’s not. It’s actually one of the most destructive patterns a man can fall into. Here’s what happened to me this morning. Monday is traditionally my squat focused leg day. Squats. Lunges. Cleans. Heavy and focused. That was the plan… but my legs had a different plan. Everything felt like so heavy. Last week’s trip with the family… the shift in my schedule… all of it caught up with me at 5am this Monday morning. The old me? He would have white-knuckled through it anyway. Tried to hit the numbers he had in his head. Failed to hit them. Then spent the rest of the day quietly pissed off at himself… and that energy would bleed into everything. His work. His patience. His presence at home. All because a Monday leg session didn’t go perfectly. That guy was exhausting to be. So over years, I shifted to being someone different. I listened. Adjusted. Switched things up and did what my body actually had to give today. And I had a great session. Not perfect. Not what I planned. But progress. That’s the shift that changes everything… It’s not about perfection. It’s never been about perfection. It’s about the pursuit of progress. Showing up. Adapting. Moving forward even when forward looks different than you planned. The 100 or nothing guy will always lose to the man who just keeps showing up… imperfectly… consistently… day after day.
