Why are Cambodians acting like this now? 🙂 Thailand's Past Asylum for Cambodian Refugees In May 1979, hundreds of thousands of Cambodian war refugees fled into Thailand along the border area of the Banthat Mountain Range. "Khao Lan" in Trat province was one of the locations where these hundreds of thousands of Cambodians gathered. When Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother (then Queen Consort of King Rama IX), learned of their plight, she visited Ban Khao Lan, the refugee gathering point, on May 26, 1979. She then instructed the Thai Red Cross Society to provide the refugees with all possible assistance. Initially, the refugees made temporary shelters under trees using available items like pha khao ma (Thai multi-purpose cloth) to shield themselves from the sun and rain. Later, they received plastic sheets for better protection. Subsequently, temporary bamboo shelters with thatched or nipa palm roofs were constructed. At the same time, temporary structures were built to serve as operational centers for aid distribution, as well as accommodation and medical units. In due course, permanent buildings were erected, including an orphanage, training centers, a school, and residences. This Thai Red Cross center provided assistance to Cambodian refugees for over seven years, officially closing on July 4, 1986. After the center closed, the Thai Red Cross requested the Royal Thai Navy to dispatch soldiers to oversee the area. The Royal Thai Navy assigned the 3rd Marine Ranger Control Unit to manage the site.
