Kickbacks, overpriced projects, and substandard infrastructure is an open secret (if not, the norm) when it comes to government constructions. Corrupt government officials steal from the money of the people, prioritizing profit over quality public services. Contractors and government officials collude in padding budget and in favoring particular contracts. Baguio City Mayor Magalong detailed the alleged massive corruption cuts of at a whooping 30% to 40% of the whole construction costs. Infrastructures are not built for the benefit of the taxpayers but rather as a money-generating scheme. All of these corrupt practice are at the expense of public safety and welfare. When roads collapse and flood controls fail, lives are put at risk. The recent surge of typhoons and continuous heavy rain throughout the country exposed the dangers of substandard infrastructures. In Benguet, the Php 264 million Kennon Road Rock Shed almost collapsed posing questions regarding its design flaws and construction oversights. In 2022, a rock netting project in Itogon, Benguet which had millions of pesos in budget collapsed. Ironically in the recent State of the Nation Address, Marcos Jr. called for the probing of the substandard or even “ghost” flood control projects. But we must ask: who is truly accountable when these very projects fail? When these infrastructures collapse under pressure? When communities are flooded despite millions spent? The blame cannot be shifted elsewhere. Marcos Jr. and his cronies must take accountability for the impacts their incompetency caused. This rotten culture of corruption runs deep in our government offices and the whole Philippine political system. The collusion between politicians, contractors, and big businesses (oftentimes one and the same) must be stopped. This is especially true when dynasties and few rich individuals rule Philippine politics - making governance a business affair rather than public service. We demand a comprehensive investigation in all corruption-ridden projects and put all involved accountable. Investigate questionable projects in Cordillera and Benguet. Investigate the Kennon Road Rock Shed. Investigate the various road development projects in the region. We must expose the truth. We must pursue justice. Our safety, welfare, and future are at stake. It’s time we do something.
