But if you reinforce your mailbox because of vandalism or put bollards in you shrubbery because of people driving through them , you can be held responsible for damage to someone’s car even though you’re protecting your property.

This is actually against the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration’s “Clear Zones”. You can sue them for either not removing the known Clear Zones danger or for not properly identifying the hazard/danger.
