The typical playbook for anyone anti science is 1-reduce subject to absurdity 2- do absolutely zero research into the topic. 3-complain and drool.

I missed the point of the video and would like to argue pedantically about what constitutes wasabi in common usage…

so I LOVE research like this the problem is funding it with tax dollars, this should be funded by investment dollars from the future beneficiaries of the research

There are two realities in our world: Jeopardy and Family Feud. Jeopardy strives for the factual answer while Family Feud embraces the popular answer. You are a Scientist with Jeopardy results as your goal, while the current populism is tilting towards Family Feud guesswork.

Did your research lead to any new ways to treat pain?

can I ask how it’s ethical to essentially torture fruit flies (or any other model organisms)? Not trying to be combative just genuinely curious what sorts of ethics go into this sort of testing, this type of research is so important but I really struggle with the ethics of it

I had a colleague that would jokingly describe her research as getting mice high and watching them dance! What she really did was look at long term opioid use and how pain signals were recieved. The main stimuli they used was a hot pad and they would monitor how long it took the mice to start picking up their paws to get away from the heat. They learned so much about how pain meds influence pain receptors.

doesn’t wasabi spice pathway differ from our capsaicin receptors? Would that affect the medication mechanism in cells?

when i was in college, one of my professors had a framed quote that i still think about— “behind every strange or confusing study is an abstract.” so many research efforts wouldn’t make sense if you just looked at what was being done at face value! progress isn’t linear!

I thought spicy foods only triggered a pain response in mammals. Is that not the case or does wasabi have a different mechanism of action from things like hot peppers?

For example if you want to launder federal money to your rich friends, you can reduce something like “measuring the effects of environmental changes on the health of ocean life critical to coastal economies and ecosystems” down to “seeing if shrimp can walk on treadmills”
