As a Croatian, I would say that main difference in languages are the influences of other countries through history on both....Croatian had more Germanic and Italian influence while Serbian had more Ottoman and Bulgarian influence and that is most visible on a word dog, in Croatian its pas( influence by then Austo-hungarian) and in Serbian kuče (coming from Bulgarian)....but Croatian is definitely it's own language that has been spoken since 7th century a.c...Croatians understand old Croatian on Baščanska ploča from 1100, basically same language plus adds from other languages

Serbs are ashamed of their dialects and their language is becoming more and more unified. Even the southern dialects are dying. Most Serb refugees from Croatia, Bosnia, and Kosovo switched to Central Serbian instantly. The same goes for students or immigrants from those regions who live and work in Serbia. Literally, the whole of Serbia is transforming to the Belgrade accent. In contrast, Croats are much more proud of their dialects and accents. They still speak them and have different cultural and linguistic organizations dedicated to teaching and preserving their dialects.

I forgot whose quote it is, but it goes like this "a language is a dialect with army". All arabs say they speak arabic, but they don't understand each other. We Serbians, Croatians and Bosnians understand each other perfectly. Only some words may be different, but still we know. It's all politics.

@ana :Čakavski and Kajkavski doesnt exist in Serbian, those are croatian dialects!!! The main difference is that in standard Croatian is used "ije" and in Serbian "e" (ekavica)

language major here, basically, language is the agreement that one specific dialect is the “correct” one in order to have a standard form. Each nation has its own standard dialect (whether being unified or not) meant to avoid misunderstandings in a communication. This goes beyond accents (pronunciation variation) since it has a lexical difference (the main differential between accents and pronunciation). (Thomas L., 1999)

The difference with catalan is that it comes from Occitan languages which are a different branch of latin than Spanish :) here in The BC there is still people calling Basque a dialect, even though it‘s a language isolate

We, in the Irish-speaking community, will always remember when someone so eloquent about languages referred to Irish as doing something because “it’s weird.” That said, I haven’t seen many videos since, but usually enjoyed them… even if I do speak a weird language.
