In the universe, diamonds and gold are common. Trees are not. Here in Cape Town, these species are now rarer in the wild than diamonds. 🌳 Yellowwood [Podocarpus latifolius], Milkwood [Sideroxylon inerme], Assegai [Curtisia dentata], Rooi-Els [Cunonia capensis], Keurboom [Virgilia oroboides], Cape Holly [Ilex mitis], Camphor Bush [Tarchonanthus camphoratus], Black ironwood [Olea capensis], Witpeer [Apodytes dimidiata], Cape Ash [Ekebergia capensis] and Wild Peach [Kiggelaria africana] were once common trees all along the rivers that streamed from the Table Mountain Range and that grew in the crags, gorges and kloofs. Make more effort to plant your indigenous and endemic species where you are. They are best suited to your biosphere and are important for keystone species of biodiversity in our fragile ecosystems! Plant such species and know that it will have a chain reaction to supporting habitats that seriously matter right now during a wave of extinctions. Planting the right tree species matters! In March 2027, the Schotsche Kloof Forest will turn 4 years old. This summer, now that the canopy has started to form, we will stop watering and weeding, and monitor closely instead. This is an example of a pocket forest in Cape Town using the Japanese Miyawaki Method to rapidly restore our fading indigenous forests. In just 25 square metres, 100 trees native to Cape Town were planted, with a 90%+ survival rate. Tucked away in an urban kloof and wedged between Schotsche Kloof Primary in Bo Kaap and neighbouring houses, this community continues to face alarming gentrification. The forest stands preserving the species of our region and the many people whose heritage goes back centuries to the Signal Hill neighbourhood of Bo Kaap. 📍 Schotsche Kloof Forest | Bo Kaap | Planted in March 2023 🌿 Forest Funded by SUGi 🌿🌳 🌿🌳 🌿🌳 🌿🌳 🌿🌳 #forestcore #miyawakimethod #bokaap #capetown #forestbathing @SUGi
