As a Hawaiian I can confirm this is very true, we call them “drop offs” Alot of tourist under estimate the ocean here. We as locals try to warn them but most come with a weird entitled attitude and they end up putting themselves in danger, alot end up drowning. They see local kids swimming in rough waters and think they can do the same, and end up having to be rescued, and sometimes by kids. So for those visiting please be advised before entering our oceans and be vigilant of our signage💯🤙🏽

It’s almost like Hawaii is occupied territory.

Plus the fact that Hawaii is extremely accessible to the mainland US means you get a lot of people visiting who don't understand the dangers.

There’s people who visit Hawaii from a landlocked state and have never seen the ocean before

Story time- 3 days ago I ran out to get these kids out of really dangerous waters. Full sprinted once I saw them, very aggressive waves and lava rock everywhere. Both kids under 10, got out and thanked me and I told them where a safe beach was… I found the dad, watching at a distance, who was mad at me for telling him adults have died swimming right there, let alone young kids. Some people are crazy. Those poor kids.

If I was to spend money vacationing on an island I would not choose Hawaii. Water too cold and dangerous. Choose the Caribbean. Warm and friendly beaches. And the locals don’t hate the tourists.

Last year, someone drown at secret beach in Kauai. We were leaving and they were trying to give him cpr and didn’t make it. So sad but those waters don’t play. When in doubt don’t go out.

Tourists also drown when swimming near waterfalls because of the currents under the water, they’re pulled into caves and can’t swim back up

That’s why you always listen to the locals and the caretakers of the beach. Don’t go beyond the safe zone and always be careful where you swim

I've lived in California my whole life and been to Maui once. I feared those waves. I've never seen beaches get quickly overtaken by waves the way they did in Maui.

I was on the north shore Waimea beach this past January and was body boarding for the first time and was doing fine swimming with my board trying to catch waves until a massive shore break set came up on me and I didn’t have time to react and took a 6 footer on the head and sent my board to the beach and sent me tumbling underwater in the craziest way possible and got like a 6 sec hold down never experienced something like that got out of the water immediately and didn’t go back in after that got humbled very quickly.
