In my area in northern Virginia tracer wires are now required in new sewer line installations or replacements, so the government finally did something 60 years too late

You can also use a steel fish tape ran through the pipe and send the signal from the buzz box through there

Decades ago we had a telco cable break. It was crossing a desert, maybe 30 miles run all told. Took nearly 2 days to find as the shifting sands had moved it about a mile. Cable broke from being stretched.
