I just inherited a 20 year old red slider and it has been an overwhelming amount of research and spending money. I can't even imagine someone inexperienced getting a baby thinking it would be easy

I got a red ear slider when I was 11 and I’m now 39 and he’s still alive and I haven’t followed any of these rules and I’m at the stage where I have to get him from my parents because they can’t take care of him and now I’m trying to set up a new home for him to take care of him right and this is so overwhelming

This is my 55gallon. My 13yr old fell out today and cracked her shell. Yes, I have been in tears and we went to the vet. I am struggling to find a basking top to go across the top to secure her in. I just recently spent $70 getting that top and she’s not secure. She’s gotten too big that she can get out. I myswlf am overwhelmed to figure with how big she has gotten because it’s costly more & more, and a lot of work. I was one of those people who didn’t do research before taking her on years ago. So to anyone starting out new if you don’t have money, find a different home pet.

I just declined the sale of a aquatic turtles thats 6 in long because the guy wanted a 20 gallon tank. he was so mad and I said too bad and walked away

I got an aquatic turtle when I was 13. He was part of a hatchling program and I just had to promise to keep him for 4 years until he was grown up. He ended up having a lot of problems and wasn't able to be released. (He was a regular patient at the vet school.) My first apartment was tiny and I set him up in the bathtub. I went through sooo many set up chemicals for the water because I had to drain it every day since I had to use it too! His lights were clamped to the towel rod. (I was so glad when I moved to a bigger place!) He was with me through getting married and having children - all the major life changes. He lived to be 17, which was about 10 years longer than expected with his issues. I loved him and I'm so glad I had him - he was wonderful. But they do require tons of care and I wouldn't seek out another aquatic turtle. He was the absolutely highest maintenance pet I have ever had.

I had a friend who got a baby turtle and put it in the thing I have pictured. Mind you, she had a red eared slider before but got rid of because the turtle was stinky. Story of the slider is her uncle got her and her nephew a turtle without talking to the parents. The nephew ended up taking the turtle back the next day. She kept hers for a few years. I remember having a huge fight with her because she believed they didn't need a filter.

I have a 80 gallon tank filled all the way and have a baby turtle on the way it’s a yellow bellied slider do you think that’s too much water I’m worried he will get lost and won’t be able to get to the top it’s pretty deep water what do you think?

I have been learning all of this the hard way. Wish I found this post when we first got home, or maybe even before. Wouldn’t have got one. Been nursing a baby turtle back to health from getting pneumonia over the past 3 weeks. He’s doing better now! Thank goodness! Still learning. Thank you for the info.
