@alysthenurse: This is also why it is so important to contain a preemie (hand hugs) during cares! #nicunurse #nursingstudent #nursingschool #newgradnurse #preemie #neuroprotection
I think it’s strange my nurses briefly and non chalantly said don’t life his legs above his head when changing his diaper but didn’t explain why or how serious this is 🫥

What gest age is this appropriate for? All the way up to 37 weeks or 34, 32? I work in a level 2.5 where we keep 32w and up and we don’t have a neuro protection policy.

Great explanation! Some cool stuff coming out where a few centers are allowing holding in the first 72 hours and are not seeing an increase in ivh

I have a 22 weeker - he had a bilateral grade 3 ivh that self resolved before discharge. It did leave him with a slightly enlarged 3rd ventricle but no hydrocephalus. He’s now 17 months and thriving 😌🫶🏼

We have an IVH protocol for less than 31 weeks. 72 hours of minimal stim, midline, minimal suctioning, no limb BPs (if UAC in place), no heel sticks, no linen changes or weights.

Make sure the OBs DO NOT milk the cord when delivering a baby <28wks, high risk for IVH.

What type of cares should be done for a baby who has IVH? Like what should we do to help protect from further damage?

My son had a grade 3 IVH. I really think his happened the days they tried to hold off my labor. I was having contractions the whole time that weren’t being picked up.

One of my 26 weekers had a bilateral grade 3 IVH. He had a subgaleal placed at 3 weeks and then a VP at 2 months. Revisions at 10 mo and 2 yo. Then a full replacement at 15. He is doing amazing! His NICU nurses took such amazing care of him and his twin!!

My son had to be transported nearly 2 hours away hours after he was born at 24 weeks. He ended up with grade 4 and grade 3 brain bleeds. I’m convinced the transport is what caused it but of course, we don’t know for sure and it was necessary anyway. 😞 Thank you for sharing this!

So how do counteract some of those risks when you have to provide care to the preemie?
