That’s why we continue to choose paper, it gives us a sense of permanence.” Toyohisa Suyama, 77, owner of the family-run Suyama Bunboguten located in Kamata, offers a glimpse into the world of Japanese stationery, and how the industry will evolve. As our team sets up the DJ equipment in the Showa era store filled with an eclectic mix of writing paraphernalia, retro toys, motorcycle helmets, and vintage posters, Suyama reflects on the roots of bunbougu: “It means tools for writing, the literal meaning of the kanji. It used to be ink and paper. During the Showa era, it became pens and notebooks. Now? I’m not sure. Technically we’re not a stationery store but a paper shop — our first product was cigarette wrapping paper.” Back then, he says, stationery shops were more like general stores — which explains the trove of Showa-era curios. When asked how the industry will survive the digital shift, Suyama points to Japan’s cultural habits. “We feel more secure leaving things behind in physical form.
