I was you. When he was found dead 2 weeks after the fact, my ph # was in his wallet so I was ‘notified’ by police. Only because his mother was still alive did I claim the body (I didn’t want her to have to do that). I spent $1200 to have him cremated and let the VA inter him. Recouped the 1200 from his checking account and moved on.. I regret nothing.

as someone in a similar position, I made the decision to discontinue care. stayed with him until the doctors pronounced. I found a place that did cremation for indigent community members for "cheap". Someone else picked up the cremains as I did not want him in my house even in death. As for his stuff? didn't care. I assume it was tossed. His golden child never made an appearance.

I’m always so unsettled when I see the sheer number of people who have been estranged from a parent. I think the lesson here if you’re paying attention is this: if you have a kid, know that when that kid one day no longer depends on you, whether they maintain their relationship with you will be a direct function of the kind of relationship you built with them.
