@legendary_tenors: 🇫🇷 Léon Lafitte (1875–1938) sings a rare, truncated version of “Ah, fuyez douce image” from Massenet’s Manon, recorded in 1903 for the Zonophone Company; notably with orchestral accompaniment, which was still a novelty at the time. After studying at the Conservatoire National in Paris, Lafitte made his debut at the Paris Opéra in 1898 and remained a leading figure there until 1924. His repertory ranged from Gounod, Berlioz, and Verdi to Wagner, and included countless roles from now-forgotten French operas. He was especially renowned for his elegance, diction, and commitment to dramatic truth. Lafitte also sang at Covent Garden, La Monnaie in Brussels, the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, Boston, Monte Carlo, Berlin, and Rio de Janeiro; often taking part in local or world premieres.
