The frustrating part is, redistricting California furthers the long term goal of banning gerrymandering all together. Make it a net loss for Republicans and they might come to the table to stop it nationally.

Do you think this should apply to packing the court too if/when democrats have power again? What seems clear to me is if Dems are ever in power again they have to abandon all decorum and stop trying to get along with republicans.

I understand there is no high road when the road is this low. But I also have a hard time when it’s objectively wrong. I don’t think they have really been taking the high road though. They have been doing almost nothing in case the backlash benefits them later.

I want federally mandated independent redistricting commissions. Until then, I want California to be 51-1, I want New York to be 24-2. Maybe if they get a taste of their own medicine, we can get a bipartisan agreement to band gerrymandering.

A 0-Republican map will also become a great test case to force the Supreme Court to block partisan gerrymandering. That would be good for everyone and *create* the high ground.

This shouldn’t be “if Texas does it again, so will we”- Texas and most R states are already heavily gerrymandered. Democrat states should just go ahead and do it as aggressively as possible and message “we will agree to a national nonpartisan redistricting standard whenever you’re ready”.

My concern, how do we prevent the inevitable negative consequences of Dems ‘throwing out the rule book,’ from backfiring? Meaning, guardrails; the moral ‘low-ground,’ corruption, power-seeking, etc., isn’t exclusively a Republican issue.

If you take Wyoming‘s population and divide that into California’s population, California should have close to 15 more seats than they currently do. 67 seats not 52.

There is a way to do both. Create 2 maps, one fair and one ruthlessly gerrymandered. The law states that if any state has a vote efficiency gap favoring republicans by more than X, we use the gerrymandered map. This says we favor fair maps, but if FA you FO.

I’ve been saying for YEARS that dems should be playing just as dirty as republicans. I argued that they should have ditched the filibuster (or at least the silent one) when they had the senate.
