“What do I call you” has so many words hidden between the lines. It’s an apology for trying too hard to control his son. It’s a symbol of respect for the man his son is growing into. It’s an act that shows that Kratos will never turn his back on his son. It shows Kratos’s respect for his son’s autonomy and independence. It’s an act of vulnerability, showing that Kratos knows he was wrong. It’s a love letter to every man with a father wound. And that’s why Atreus embraces his father again. They are both choosing to be better.

super late to this, but fun fact in ancient greece the name given to you by your father was super important and being cast out by your dad usually meant you would give up your name too so asking what he would like to be called instead was not just asking for his name but also asking if he still wanted to be his son

"Off your back." Kratos only wanting to protect his son in the heat of battle and talk with him afterwards is golden. "What do I call you?" And asking his son who he truly wants to be, then when Atreus hugs him, he says his name with such relief, knowing the side Atreus wants to take into battle during Ragnarök.

This game is literally about how he can balance feelings this kid is being raised by a man who barely felt emotions let alone raised a boy. This was new to Kratos and he still managed to make his voice soft with his boy. He loved that boy more than anything and it really shows.

The foreshadowing in this scene is amazing. Tyr saying “Atreus?” Because he’s called him Loki for the past like 2 hours of the game. Brok and Sindri are in the same positions as when Brok dies, and Brok still reassuring Sindri as he does when he passes. And the “what do I call you?” Goes into the “Loki will go, Atreus will stay” at the end of the
