@mattrieck: Video 489 Age Discrimination at work a real thing in America, or are older people bringing a lot of this on themselves? Well I will tell you as someone who hired a lot of people that it can be a real thing, and at the same time older people are really making things way harder on themselves than they need to. I can say this as an old dude myself. If older people talk constantly about the past or their many years of experience, then they are directing traffic at themselves. If they instead respond by being energetic, having fresh ideas, being open and willing to learn, and have the ability to change, they will be successful. #agediscrimination #career #mattrieck #newjob #careeradvancement

WHY don't hiring managers take responsibility for turnover by losing some pay. Turnover is lost / wasted revenue & their LYING is part of the problem

I agree with you. No one will notice your age unless you point them to it or make them notice your age.

Ageism should be treated the same as other forms of illegal discrimination. With consequences for employers who do it.

I’m 64. In the last 10-years I’ve interviewed and been hired by 3-different companies. I’ve never felt discrimination because of my age.

I can tell you absolutely. We promoted less qualified people that were under 40 because the management pool was over 55. They wanted to reduce the average age. Funny, the 40 year old comes to the 60+ me for tech help even though I’m not in IT.

Age discrimination is totally real. Preconceived notions about a person due to age is hard to combat. Can be in our benefit too. Wanting a mature person to do work and not come in with the “work life balance” mentality.

I am on the fence over how I feel about this question. I am in retail and older. I could be on the fence because of where I am currently working but I will not put it out there where that is. I appreciate your TT’s.

Oh it’s real. People get ghosted all the time because of their age. Younger people get promoted over much more qualified somewhat older workers almost all the time.

There has always been age discrimination. In the 90s, my boss was so mad that I was hiring a 50ish man with a lot of good experience. My boss only wanted to hire 20ish ppl and train them - which was exhausting and really ineffective. Staff works well with a mix of ages and experience.

I'm not trying to brag, I have turned down more jobs offers because of having a prospective on thing. You are absolutely right. having the right attitude and trying to live up to them goes a long way.

Lower rate employees (reducing costs for this role) is the code the HR uses for younger emoloyees. It is synonymous in most cases.

Yep, I’m older but my mom is 80+ and still working. I’m not retiring. When they ask about my college and it says 1988, I have no chance.

I’m 35 and can’t find a job. I feel like it’s partly because I’m getting older and companies are looking for younger “fresh out of college” candidates.
