🚨 Handling the “slack” one PART 2👇 ▶️ As a manager it can be really frustrating when your direct report seems to drag their feet and take ages to do something you see as important. ▶️ In a situation like this our automatic reaction is often to criticise and “tell them off”. This is unlikely to improve the situation if anything it is likely to demotivate them further and impact your working relationship. ▶️ Communication is key. Sometimes as a manager we can genuinely make an assumption that our direct report knows how urgent something is. Assumptions are the road to disappointment. If your direct report is someone who doesn’t always see the urgency of things I’d recommend doing the following: 1️⃣ Set clear deadlines in a collaborative way. “What would it take for you to complete this in the next 48 hours?” 2️⃣ Explain why it is a priority. People respond better when they understand the wider context. 3️⃣ Support them to meet the deadline by discussing their workload, providing direction with prioritisation and if needs be taking stuff off their hands. 4️⃣ Let them know that if anything comes up that could interfere with meeting the deadline to flag it to you straight away so you can agree a way forward together. This could sound like: “If anything comes up in the next [TIMEFRAME] that is going to get in the way of you meeting this deadline then I need you to come and let me know so we can review all the priorities and agree how best to proceed together” 📌 Please be mindful this video offers one possible approach. It will not fit every situation- if it doesn’t feel right for your situation ignore it. Do what feels right for you. 💬 Leave a 👏 in the comments if you found this helpful 👀 #worktips #leadershipdevelopment #corporatelife #emotionalintelligence #manager #communicationskills #communication #managingpeople #difficultconversations #difficultpeople #criticism
