RF Kuang is a terrible storyteller. Her characters don’t feel real or authentic. Her books read like essays.

OKAY THANK YOU. So I respect wang as a writer? But SO much of her writing constantly relies on extending a sympathetic eye to the oppressor to an extent that I legitimately think that this is her, as a mixed person, trying to justify or deal with white people’s racism as someone who’s got a white parent. Like BOBH relies on this idea that people ‘just don’t know’ about the horrors of colonialism, they don’t know they’re colonizing. They’re literally being kept in the dark. SOK has a similar aspect to it, but even more so, is supposed to be for everyone to “walk a mile in each others shoes” (her literal quote from her website). Which like… is a sweet idea… until you remember we’re talking abt colonialism. As in Koreans need to walk a mile in the Japanese shoes and visa versa regarding WW2, and like… I’m so sorry that’s ridiculous! Who is benefiting from that? Colonizers cruelty doesn’t need sympathy, it’s good to know how and why it forms, but frankly Leopold doesn’t need our sympathy or empathy. He needs to be dragged through the dirt so everyone understands what an evil shit he was and understands what happens when an entire country lacks basic empathy for anyone different from them. You don’t need to know how they felt and the internal justifications of a racist tho. Sympathizing with them because they’re racist is useless. It’s just…. Ughhhhhhhhh
